Namibia Explorer Bike Tour – 12 Days / 11 Nights

The Namibia Explorer Bike Tour is a compact mountain bike journey through some of Namibia’s most beautiful landscapes. Over 12 days, we combine rewarding cycling with the highlights of a classic Namibia safari – the Khomas Highlands, the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and the Atlantic coast, the granite landscapes of the Erongo Mountains, Etosha National Park and a final wildlife ride at Otjiwa. Namibia is made for this kind of biking. Quiet gravel roads, farm tracks, jeep trails and open desert landscapes allow us to explore areas far away from busy roads and towns. We select the most scenic and enjoyable sections to ride, while longer distances are covered comfortably in our support vehicle. This is not a race. The tour is about experiencing Namibia from the saddle, with time to stop, enjoy the landscapes and wildlife and explore the country along the way. Accommodation is in comfortable guesthouses and lodges, with a special two-night glamping stay in the Erongo Mountains. A professional bike guide accompanies the tour, supported by a vehicle and bike trailer throughout the journey. The Explorer is our shorter alternative to the Namibia Classic Bike Tour – ideal for guests who want a varied Namibia biking experience within 12 days.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Windhoek

On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, we meet our guide and transfer to our guesthouse in Windhoek.
During the afternoon, we fit our bikes and prepare for the adventure ahead. Depending on arrival times, there may be an opportunity for a short test ride in the Avis Dam/Farm Windhoek area.
If time permits, we can also take a short tour of Windhoek before enjoying our welcome dinner.

Day 2

Windhoek to Namibgrens

After breakfast, we leave Windhoek and travel west into the scenic Khomas Highlands.
We get onto our bikes along the way and ride selected sections of quiet gravel road through rolling mountains, dry river valleys and open farmland.
Our destination is Namibgrens, situated high on the edge of the Namib Escarpment. The area offers excellent mountain biking, with gravel roads, jeep tracks and trails through spectacular granite landscapes.
In the afternoon, we can explore some of the farm trails before enjoying a sundowner overlooking the vast Namib plains below.

Day 3

Spreetshoogte Pass and the Namib Desert

We start the morning with another ride through the beautiful Namibgrens area before making our way towards Spreetshoogte Pass.
From the top of the escarpment, we have one of the finest views in Namibia, looking far across the seemingly endless plains of the Namib Desert.
We descend from the highlands towards the desert and continue through the Solitaire area towards our accommodation near Sossusvlei.
We settle in for a comfortable two-night stay, giving us a full day to explore Sossusvlei without having to change accommodation.

Day 4

Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei & Desert Biking

We start early and travel into the Namib-Naukluft National Park to experience one of Namibia’s great natural highlights – Sossusvlei.
Surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world, Sossusvlei and nearby Dead Vlei offer one of Africa’s most extraordinary desert landscapes. We explore the area on foot, with the opportunity to climb a dune and walk into Dead Vlei with its ancient camelthorn trees.
After our Sossusvlei excursion, we can get onto our bikes for an easier ride in the Sesriem area.
Depending on time and conditions, we may ride towards Sesriem Canyon, Elim Dune or along suitable roads and tracks in the surrounding desert landscape.
Today is deliberately flexible. The main focus is enjoying Sossusvlei without rushing, with biking added where it fits naturally into the day.

Day 5

Blutkuppe & the Namib Naukluft Park to Swakopmund

Today we cross one of the most fascinating parts of the Namib Desert on our way to the Atlantic coast.
We head into the Blutkuppe area of the Namib-Naukluft Park, an impressive wilderness of granite outcrops, open gravel plains and vast desert scenery.
Here we unload our bikes and enjoy a circular ride through the desert landscape. The route follows quiet gravel tracks and jeep roads, with the unusual rock formations of Blutkuppe forming a dramatic backdrop.
After our ride, we load the bikes and continue across the Namib towards Swakopmund.

Day 6

Fat Biking in the Swakopmund Dunes

After breakfast, we swap our mountain bikes for specially designed fat bikes and head into the spectacular coastal dunes.
The wide tyres allow us to ride across the sand and enjoy the dunes in a completely different way. Our local guide chooses the best route according to the conditions.
The afternoon is free to explore Swakopmund or take part in one of the many optional coastal activities.

Day 7

Moon Landscape & Erongo Mountains

We leave Swakopmund and head into the extraordinary Moon Landscape, east of town.
We get onto our bikes and ride selected tracks through this fascinating desert landscape towards Goanikontes Oasis in the Swakop River valley.
Later, we continue towards the Erongo Mountains, one of Namibia’s most beautiful granite mountain regions.
Our destination is our glamping accommodation surrounded by huge granite boulders and spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 8

Mountain Biking in the Erongo Mountains

Today is dedicated to biking.

The Erongo Mountains offer an excellent mixture of jeep tracks, flowing trails and scenic routes winding between huge granite boulders.
The riding can be adapted to the group. Easier scenic loops are available, while stronger riders can explore longer and more challenging routes.
Wildlife such as giraffe, zebra and various antelope may be encountered along the way.

Day 9

Erongo Mountains to Etosha

After breakfast, we leave the Erongo Mountains and travel north towards Etosha National Park.
Depending on timing, we may include a final shorter ride in the Erongo region before loading the bikes and continuing north.
We arrive at our lodge near Etosha in the afternoon and settle in for a two-night stay.

Day 10

Etosha National Park

Today the bikes stay behind as we spend the day exploring Etosha National Park.
Etosha is one of Southern Africa’s great wildlife reserves. Its waterholes attract elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, springbok, kudu, oryx and many other species.
With some luck, we may also see lion, leopard, cheetah or rhino.
We spend the day game viewing before returning to our lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 11

Etosha to Otjiwa – Final Wildlife Ride

We leave the Etosha area and travel south towards Otjiwa, one of Namibia’s oldest private game reserves.
We aim to reach Otjiwa around lunchtime before heading out on our final bike ride of the tour.
We ride along easy-to-cycle jeep tracks through beautiful savannah and bushveld. Along the way, we may encounter giraffe, ostrich, white rhino and a variety of antelope.
It is a fun and relaxed final ride through a landscape that has something of a Kalahari feel to it.
We finish the ride with a sundowner on a hill overlooking the reserve, a memorable way to celebrate our final evening together.

Day 12

Departure

After breakfast, we travel south towards Windhoek.
Depending on flight times, we may stop at the woodcarvers’ market in Okahandja or have time for a final lunch or some shopping in Windhoek.
We then continue to Hosea Kutako International Airport for our departure flight.
Our Namibia Explorer Bike Tour comes to an end after 12 days of mountain biking, desert landscapes, giant dunes, the Atlantic coast and unforgettable African wildlife.
