Damaraland-Mountain-Bike-Adventure

Damaraland Mountain Bike Adventure – 8 Days / 7 Nights

The Damaraland Bike Tour takes you through some of the most spectacular and remote landscapes in Namibia. From the granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe, we ride north into the rugged desert landscapes around the Brandberg and through the wide-open wilderness of Damaraland. This is a tour for cyclists who want to experience Namibia away from the main tourist routes. We ride on quiet gravel roads, jeep tracks and selected trails through landscapes where there is very little traffic and where wildlife still moves freely through the wilderness. Along the way, we experience the Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg region, the Ugab and Huab ephemeral river valleys, Twyfelfontein and the granite landscapes of the Erongo Mountains. The tour combines longer rides through remote areas with shorter mountain bike trails. Our support vehicle accompanies the tour, allowing us to adapt the daily riding distances to the group, weather and conditions. Accommodation is a combination of comfortable lodges and camping in some of Namibia’s most beautiful wilderness areas.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival Windhoek

On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, we meet our guests and transfer them to their accommodation in Windhoek.
Later we meet at the Namibia Individual Travel and Mountain Bike Namibia base, where we fit the bikes and prepare for the tour.
Depending on arrival times, we can take a short introductory ride on the trails and gravel roads around Windhoek. This gives everyone time to become comfortable with their bikes before we head into Damaraland.
In the evening, we enjoy dinner together and discuss the adventure ahead.

Accommodation: Ti Melen Guesthouse or similar

Day 2

Windhoek to Spitzkoppe

After breakfast, we leave Windhoek and travel west towards Usakos and the Spitzkoppe.
Near Usakos, we get onto our bikes and begin our first proper ride through the open Namibian landscape towards the Spitzkoppe.
The enormous granite peaks rise dramatically from the surrounding plains and provide one of Namibia’s most impressive landscapes.
Depending on the group and available time, we can continue riding around the base of the Spitzkoppe and explore some of the smaller tracks and trails in the area
We spend the evening surrounded by granite mountains and enjoy the incredible desert sunset and clear Namibian night sky.

Accommodation: Spitzkoppe Area (camping)

Day 3

Drive to the Fish River Canyon

You will continue your journey south through arid terrain dotted with succulents such as quiver trees. Along the way, you will visit a quiver tree forest and a nearby geological site known for its dramatic basalt formations. The day ends near the Fish River Canyon, a striking landscape of granite boulders and wide vistas.

Day 4

Ugab to the Huab River Valley

Today is one of the great wilderness rides of the tour.
We cycle deeper into Damaraland through the landscapes of the Doro!Nawas Conservancy towards the Huab River Valley.
The route takes us through a vast, sparsely populated landscape of gravel plains, rocky hills and dry river valleys.

Wildlife moves freely through this region, and although sightings can never be guaranteed, we may encounter oryx, springbok, giraffe and other desert-adapted wildlife along the way.
We finish our ride in the beautiful Huab region, surrounded by the silence and space of Damaraland.

Accommodation: Huab Area (camping)

Day 5

Huab River to Twyfelfontein

After breakfast in the wilderness, we continue by bike through Damaraland towards Twyfelfontein.
Again, we ride through a landscape where there is little traffic and few signs of civilisation.
Later we visit Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of Africa’s most important collections of ancient rock engravings.
After several days in the wilderness, we enjoy a comfortable lodge evening in the Twyfelfontein area.

Accommodation: Twyfelfontein Area (Lodging)

Day 6

Twyfelfontein to the Erongo Mountains

Today we leave Damaraland and travel south towards the Erongo Mountains.
The scenery gradually changes as we approach the huge granite formations of the Erongo region.
In the afternoon, we get back onto our bikes to explore some of the excellent mountain bike trails in the area.
The trails wind between granite boulders and through beautiful bushveld, with the possibility of seeing giraffe, zebra, antelope and other wildlife while we ride.
Different routes are available, allowing us to choose an easier ride or a longer and more challenging trail.

Accommodation: Erongo Mountains (Lodging)

Day 7

Erongo Mountains to Okahandja

After breakfast, we travel towards Okahandja for our final full day of riding.
In the afternoon, we head out on a game cycle on private trails in the area.
This is a completely different riding experience from the long desert roads of Damaraland. We cycle on dedicated trails through the bush, with opportunities to see wildlife from the saddle.
Depending on how everyone feels after the week’s riding, we can choose between a shorter or longer route.
We then enjoy our final evening together and look back on a week of riding through some of Namibia’s wildest landscapes.

Accommodation: Okahandja Area (Lodging)

Day 8

Departure

After breakfast, there may be time for a final short ride before we return to Windhoek.
Depending on flight times, we can stop at the Okahandja craft market or spend some time in Windhoek before transferring to Hosea Kutako International Airport.
Our Damaraland biking adventure ends after eight days of desert landscapes, remote trails, wilderness camps and some unforgettable cycling through Namibia’s northwest.
