Kaokoland-Bike-Tour

Kaokoland Bike Tour – 13 Days / 12 Nights

This is our more adventurous mountain bike tour through the remote northwest of Namibia. We start with riding around Spitzkoppe and the Erongo Mountains before travelling north through Damaraland to Twyfelfontein, Doros Crater and the Palmwag area. From here the tour becomes more remote as we bike and travel through the Palmwag wilderness, the Hoanib River area and on towards Purros and the Hoarusib River. We spend four nights camping in the wilderness, look for desert-adapted elephants and visit a local Himba community along the way. The daily rides are flexible, with our support vehicle always nearby, as distances and conditions can vary considerably in this part of Namibia. After Kaokoland we continue to Etosha for wildlife viewing before finishing with a final bike ride at Otjiwa and returning to Windhoek.

Itineraries

Day 1

Arrival in Windhoek

Arrival in Windhoek and overnight at similar accommodation to our other bike tours. Bike fitting and, depending on arrival time, a short test ride around Windhoek.

Day 2

Windhoek to Erongo Mountains

Drive from Windhoek towards Spitzkoppe. We bike in the beautiful Spitzkoppe area, exploring the gravel roads and tracks around the granite mountains. Afterwards, continue to Hohenstein Lodge in the Erongo Mountains for overnight.

Day 3

To Twyfelfontein

Continue north into Damaraland towards Twyfelfontein, including a suitable bike section along the way. In the afternoon, visit the Twyfelfontein UNESCO World Heritage rock engravings.

Day 4

Doros Crater Bike Ride

In the morning, do a round-trip mountain bike ride from the Twyfelfontein area towards Doros Crater and back. This should be one of the main bike rides of the tour.

Day 5

Palmwag Concession

Enter the remote Palmwag Concession, bordering the Skeleton Coast National Park. Bike through the rugged volcanic desert landscape, combining biking and vehicle support depending on conditions.

Day 6

Palmwag Wilderness

Continue through the wilderness towards the Hoanib River, biking suitable sections along the way.
We camp in the area where the Mudorib River joins the Hoanib River, an incredibly remote and beautiful area and excellent habitat for desert-adapted wildlife, particularly elephants.

Day 7

To Purros

A real adventure day. Continue from the Hoanib through the Tsusub Gorge and across towards Purros and the Hoarusib River.
We bike as much of the route as is suitable, with the support vehicle available for difficult or very long sections.

Day 8

Purros

A full day exploring the Purros and Hoarusib area.
We bike in the area, search for desert-adapted elephants and visit a local Himba community. The exact program can remain flexible depending on wildlife movements and conditions.

Day 9

Purros – Sesfontein - Grootberg

Leave Purros and travel south via Sesfontein. We can include a morning bike section before continuing towards Grootberg.
After four nights of camping, we enjoy a comfortable lodge night.

Day 10

To Etosha National Park

Full day of game viewing in Etosha National Park, visiting the different waterholes and looking for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra and the many other animals found in the park.

Day 11

Etosha National Park

Full day of game viewing in Etosha National Park, visiting the different waterholes and looking for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra and the many other animals found in the park.

Day 12

Central Highlands

After breakfast, we can enter Etosha National Park for a final game drive, depending on timing, before continuing south via Outjo towards Otjiwa Lodge.
We should aim to reach Otjiwa in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, we get back onto our bikes for a really enjoyable final ride through the Otjiwa nature and wildlife area. The landscape has a bit of a Kalahari feel to it, and we ride mainly on easy-to-ride jeep tracks, making this a relaxed and fun ride after the more adventurous biking in Kaokoland.
There is plenty of wildlife in the area, including giraffe, ostrich, white rhino and a variety of antelope, so the ride combines biking with a great wildlife experience.

We finish the ride at a sundowner hill overlooking the beautiful nature area, where we enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down. This should be a really nice final biking experience and ending to the tour.

Day 13

Departure

After breakfast, drive back to Windhoek and transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport for departure.
