Mountain bike tours through Namibia
On a mountain bike through the deserts of Namibia? But is it not hot, thorny, sandy and hostile territory for someone on a bicycle?

What about the comforts of a good bed and good food and how does one get to see enough of this huge and beautiful country to go back home satisfied, while on the saddle of a bike?

No problem, says Andy, an experienced tour guide and avid mountain biker that has been guiding guests through the Namibian countryside for years. “We have surprisingly few punctures, the surfaces are surprisingly firm and the time of day we choose to cycle makes it pleasant and extremely enjoyable”.

Three years ago, after many years of guiding his guests from the comforts of his Landcruiser, he decided to make a change and include a new combination Safari/Bike tour to his itineraries. These bike tours would take his guests on unforgettable adventures through Namibia on the seat of a bike.

“For the past three years we have been guiding groups of up to 14 cyclists on 18 day cycle safaris through Namibia. We teamed up with and experienced European bike adventure company and have learned an immense amount about offering enjoyable and safe bike safaris”.

“Over the past two years the fixed departures have almost always been fully booked. With the experience we have gained, we have now decided to make our mountain bike tours available to mountain bike and Namibia enthusiasts in other European countries”.

Namibia is over 820 000 square km in size. It has a population of not more than 2million people and this makes it a very attractive wilderness/nature destination, where one can experience the outdoors in all its natural beauty. The general infrastructure is in a very good condition, the roads are good, the country is politically stable and there is little crime. We have a good telecommunications network and medical support is readily available.

The standard of accommodation, food and water are of the highest and this also applies when guests are taken on a camping bike tour. Food supplies, fuel and even bicycle spares are available in all corners of the country. The best time to visit Namibia is between the months of March and October, when it is cooler and there is little or no rain. It is also a good time to see the wildlife.

On a first visit to Namibia, most guests would like to see Sossusvlei and the desert in the South, Swakopmund at the coast, Damaraland , Kaokoland and the Etosha National Park . A round trip like this back to Windhoek , the capital, is about 3000 km. A tour of about 2-3 weeks gives guests the opportunity to travel these distances with ease, cycle the most beautiful stretches and to see and experience some of the most special attractions. We also offer shorter tours which concentrate on all three of the most interesting corners of Namibia, each of these tours being between 6-8 days in duration. See tours The transfers by vehicle are intended to be the safari, landscape and wildlife viewing part of the journey and can be just as fulfilling as the cycle stretches.

Our tours cater for between 4 and 14 guests. The transfer vehicle/s doubles as a support/back-up vehicle and we take along an extra driver/camp assistant for this. The tours have more camping nights than fixed accommodation nights. This provides for some special experiences and some of the most beautiful places are only accessible when one is prepared to camp. The camping is of a good standard and we provide tents, mattresses and sit down meals in the wilderness under the stars.

Our existing clients bring their own mountain bikes. We find that most cyclist prefer their own equipment and the airlines transports these with ease and safely. We can arrange rental mountain bikes if necessary.
